In the hot field of themes for Wordpress, there are two leading contenders – DIYThemes with Thesis and Solostream with a variety of themes. Their approaches are night and day, appealing to an individual sense of style and level of coding expertise.
Any customization of the Thesis theme, for example, requires manipulating code within a couple of theme files, including custom.css. If you know and are skilled with css coding there is no problem.
Solostream, on the other hand, is growing company that is pumping out an array of astonishingly appealing themes that require little or no knowledge of code. Customization of Solostream themes is done from within an intuitive, easy control panel.
I am testing Solostream’s latest offering, WP-Prolific, now on this site with virtually no time invested in customizing the look. Mind you – I have spent just a couple of minutes playing with this theme but plan to build on it over the next couple of days. I can say that it has great features built-in. Check out the Archives page, by the way.
The winner in my book? It’s easy. Solostream.

I follow three theme makers, Studio Press, Solostream, and Thesis Theme.
While there is the opportunity to customize Thesis using the ’side’ files, it is not a requirement. I personally know of a dozen free customizations (very well done) that are available and all you have to do is copy the files over. In addition, Thesis provides an unprecedented amount of customization within its design and options panel.
If you combine that with the outstanding builtin SEO capabilities and best support forum on the ‘net, Thesis Theme is hard to say no to…
The one downside to Thesis is that once you use it, it kinda puts you off to using any other themes. Of course I’m a tad biased because I run the Thesis Theme Showcase Gallery, which has over 250 Thesis Customizations on display.

Hi, just wondering how come you chose just 2 contenders for this post, DIYThemes with Thesis and Solostream? No question that these 2 companies have great themes. But I have found many many others who provide similar great themes. The reason I say that is that I just began a new blog and I have been searching for a theme for the past 2 months, and I have come across hundreds of themes that are just great.
So just wondering why you think only these 2 are best. Is that personal preference or what was your reasoning. Thanks again for your blog.
