The other day, a Wordpress theme developer send me a theme he had created, and asked that I review it here. I checked out his theme, and emailed him back with a few questions about how to change font sizes and customize the theme. I never heard back from him. To me, at least, that’s a warning sign about choosing a Wordpress theme – is the developer responsive to customer questions … or not. Incidentally, the fellow was charging $59 for his theme.
I’ve written here before about choosing a theme for a Wordpress blog. I advocate using themes that reputable designers and developers create and sell … then, support with a high level of customer service and/or an interactive user forum. I especially like themes created by Solostream.com and DIYThemes.com. Click on the boxes in the middle column to learn more.
I don’t mean to indict free themes because there are many terrific free themes, or themes where the designer simply asks for a contribution. A couple of good examples are Sadish Bala or the Copyblogger theme. But, unfortunately, there are some other free themes that contain hidden spyware and links to unsavory Web sites, and must be avoided.
The point of my rambling here is that I believe a top priority for selecting a Wordpress theme is support – does the developer provide support or not. Good customer support will save you a lot of headaches.
