Two Great Plugins for Thesis Theme

Posted on March 4, 2009 by David with 6 Comments

With the latest version – 1.4.2 – of the popular Thesis theme for Wordpress blogs is a very appealing option to create “Features and Highlights.” In addition to the standard blog look of postings listed on the page, Thesis permits one or several Feature stories, followed by Highlights.

You can see a good example of this at www.djavadi.net and www.bahaiwords.com.

But, how to you create tiny thumbnail images to appear with the Highlights? The solution is astonishingly easy – a plugin called Thumbnail for excerpts. Simply upload the plugin to the plugin folder of a Wordpress blog, activate and that’s it. The size of the thumbnails can easily be changed by clicking Edit from the Plugins page of Wordpress.

The other plugin for Thesis solves the learning curve about “hooks” or special features to customize a Thesis theme. It’s called Thesis OpenHook by the very talented Rick Beckman. All I can say is you’ve got to try it. I found it to be embarrassingly easy to use, and to add enhanced customization.

A final word about the Thesis theme — it is supported by one of the best user forums I have ever experienced, populated by a lot of helpful people who are focused on collaboration to answer questions.

Thesis support is awful. What company do you pay for a product and their product support consists of users who 90% of the time give you the wrong advice. I’m mad I paid for it. It’s not “easy” to use as it suggests. A forum is not a substitute for standalone product support. You email them, they don’t email you. Never again.

Why don’t you simply ask for a refund rather than complaining? The Thesis forum is quite good for those with a little knowledge of coding but not for everyone?

  3. Rainy,

From my own experience, I know there is a learning curve on Thesis, but I would not call the support forum “awful.” I have found the answers to all my questions there.

As Sid indicated, why not just ask for your money back?

  4. I can’t speak about what the forum is like, but my own request for a refund hasn’t been addressed yet by the company. I hope they will answer me. It was very hard to figure out how to write to them with my request. I have nothing bad to say about Thesis, I just found an alternative that was a better value.

I recommend checking out frugal Theme as an alternative with very good support: http://frugaltheme.com/. Gorgeous clean design and a better price for the developer’s version given that with Thesis you have to pay $40 each time you use it for a client’s site.

So I’m not against Thesis at this point, it just wasn’t right for me and so far I am unhappy with their customer service.

  5. An update: today I got my refund, so that’s a relief. I wish that it had been clearer on the site about where to send the request but at least it did go through.
