For a while, I thought it was just me … that I was having bad Web hosting karma. But, I have learned that many bloggers encounter issues with unreliable or inconsistent hosting service and empty advertising claims from Web hosting companies.
I once used a Web hosting company that had U.S. flag icons pasted all over its home page, and claimed it was located in Ohio. But the truth was that customer service and the company’s servers were in the Ukraine, and turned out to be highly unreliable.

Another Web hosting company delivered exceedingly slow service. A person in their tech department quietly told me that it was because they were simply putting too many hosting accounts on each server, bringing speed to a snail’s pace.
More recently, I switched to a premium VPS (virtual private server) service at InMotion Hosting. Among the company’s promises were regular backups. Yet, when two of my blogs were hacked and taken off-line by brute force, InMotion’s last backup was nearly three months old. I am now forced to apologize to friends to whom I had recommended InMotion Hosting even though the company is better than most.
The problem with the Web hosting business, with few exceptions, is that it’s run either by technical people with no communication skills and/or testosterone-driven sales guys who have complete disregard for the truth.
I am left scratching my head to find a reliable, accountable and affordable Web hosting company, and hesitant about ever recommending a company to a friend.
